Stable isotope equipment

  • ANCA-SL (Automated Nitrogen Carbon Analyzer - Solids and Liquids) coupled to a SerCon 20-20 IRMS (Isocube electronics)
  • A SerCon high temperature furnace (1400ºC thermal decomposition elemental analyzer) can be coupled to one of our 20-20 Sercon IRMS devices
  • Modified Shimadzu TOC-VCSH (Total Organic Carbon analyzer) coupled to a modified SerCon 20-20 IRMS (Isocube electronics) via the elemental analyzer
  • ANCA-TGII (Automated Nitrogen Carbon Analyzer – Trace Gases) coupled to a SerCon 20-20 IRMS (Isocube electronics)
  • A Finnigan Trace GC Ultra with combustion interface (GC/C combustion III) coupled to a Finnigan DeltaplusXP
  • A Finnigan Surveyor HPLC with LC-IsoLINK interface coupled to a Finnigan DeltaPLUSXP

Research themes
ISOFYS research interests are centered around four major themes:

  • Isotope biogeochemistry and isotope ecology;
  • Terrestrial ecosystems and greenhouse gas budgets;
  • Integrated nutrient management for tropical agronomy;
  • Development of new stable isotope analyses methods.

Stable isotope analyses

  • Solid samples: natural abundance: d15N, d 13C, d 18O; enriched samples: atom% 15N, atom% 13C (up to 5 atom%)
  • NO3- in water samples: d 15N and d18O via AgNO3 or bacterial method
  • Gasses: natural abundance: d13C18O2, d13CH4, d15N218O, d15N2; enriched samples:  atom% 13CO2, atom% 13CH4, atom% 15N2O, atom% 15N2 (up to 10 Atom%)
  • Compound specific: d13C PLFA and on request
