Benelux Association for Stable Isotope Scientists (BASIS)

Save the date: BASIS symposium 2026 will be held on March 31 and April 1, 2026 and will be organized in Brussels, Belgium. More information will be added in the symposium page in the menu.

On June 13, 2006, the Benelux Association for Stable Isotope Scientists (BASIS) was officially established. BASIS emerged from the former Benelux Isotope Group (BIG), a group of active scientists who organized annual meetings without a formal organization. BIG began in 2000 as an Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (IRMS) user group and has met annually since then.
The founders of BASIS were Dr. Frans Stellaard and Ruud Lans. They, as chairman and treasurer respectively, formed the first board, along with Dr. Pascal Boeckx as secretary.

Since its inception, BASIS has provided a solid foundation for this group and has focused on a broader aspect of stable isotope measurements and applications.

Because BASIS tries to provide information on stable isotopes especially to novice scientists, a search function was introduced on the website in December 2013. This function allows you to search by member institutes, for example, but also to search/filter by the type of instruments used, the isotopes measured, etc. You will also find contact details of people within the listed institutes. You can find this option under Institutes Institutes in the menu.
